Minnesota Golden Gophers Football is one of the most popular sports in the Gopher Athletic Department. The Golden Gophers football roster has sent a team to the field every year since 1882. Currently, the Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Roster plays all of its home games at the new TCF Bank Stadium under the leadership of Gophers Head Coach Tim Brewster. TCF Bank Stadium, was built on the University of Minnesota campus in Stadium Village. The state of the art stadium, was opened in September 2009, in time for the 2009 Minnesota Gophers Football Schedule. The first game played at TCF Bank Stadium was Air Force vs. the Minnesota Golden Gophers.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers also have a strong Hockey Program. The Golden Gophers Men's Hockey Program competes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The Golden Gopher Hockey Program has won 5 NCAA National Championship Titles since 1970 and have become one of the most completive collegiate Hockey Programs in the country. One of the unique things about the Minnesota Gophers Hockey Roster, is that primarily all of the players are born and raised playing Minnesota Hockey. Head Coach Don Lucia, has made a point to recruit from Minnesota High School and Juniors players, saying that the Minnesota Golden Gophers Hockey program should be a home-town hockey team, with home-town players... the town in this case happens to be state of Minnesota.
The Minnesota Golden Gophers Basketball program is another strong team within the University of Minnesota Athletics Department. Gopher Basketball led by Coach Tubby Smith is one of the most competitive collegiate basketball teams in the Big 10. The Minnesota Golden Gophers Men's basketball program plays all of its home games in Williams Arena. Williams Arena is often sold out for Gopher Men's Basketball games, especially the student section which is known as the barnyard.
The Golden Gopher nickname came from a satirical cartoon that depicted Minnesotan Politicians as Gophers, giving the state of Minnesota the nickname, "the Gopher State". Then in the 1930's and 1940's the University of Minnesota athletic team wore all gold jerseys, adding Golden to the title. The University of Minnesota's Mascot's official name is Goldy the Gopher. Goldy is a non-gendered gopher, though most students think he is male and a study showed that most U of M Gophers fans feel he looks more like a beaver or a squirrel.
